Jigoro Kano, the Father of Judo
Jigoro Kano (嘉納治五郎), the founder of Judo, conceived it not merely as a system of attack and defense, but as a way to use one’s physical and mental abilities effectively, perfect oneself through practice, and contribute to society. He expressed this philosophy through two teachings:
Seiryoku Zenyo (精力善用) — Use Your Energy for Good
Use your physical and mental abilities not only in Judo, but for the good of society as well.
Jita Kyoei (自他共栄) — Mutual Welfare and Benefit
Build mutual trust and support one another so that everyone can prosper together and contribute to a better society.

In Japan, the teachings of Judo have long been expressed through Japanese calligraphy and displayed as kakemono. More than decoration, a kakemono becomes your “Silent Teacher,” encouraging your Judo journey every day.

Judo has been part of our lives for 35 years. It brought my wife and me together and took us around the world through competitions and training camps. I came to understand that Judo is far more than a combat sport. Jigoro Kano’s principles of Jita Kyoei and Seiryoku Zenyo offer guidance for Judo, work, family, and life. To keep these principles in mind, we chose these handmade kakemono scrolls. They now hang in our home as daily reminders of everything Judo has given us.
